This student listened to this khutba by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, may Allah be pleased with him, a week ago and it touched upon quite a lot of matters that are close to ones heart.
May Allah reward our teachers with Tawfeeq and help us to have good character with those in our care. Allahumma Ameen.
Today we were reminded of the beautiful reflections found in Surah al-Balad ~ The City (Surat 90: Verse 1-20)
I swear by this city -
And you are resident in this city -
And by a father and what he fathered,
Verily We have created man in toil and struggle.
Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?
He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!
Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? -
And a tongue, and a pair of lips? -
And shown him the two highways?
But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.
And what will explain to thee the path that is steep? -
(It is: ) freeing the bondman;
Or the giving of food in a day of privation
To the orphan with claims of relationship,
Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.
Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.
Such are the Companions of the Right Hand.
But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.
On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round).
In particular got listening to Shaykh Hamza Yusuf’s tutorial on the reflections of Surah al-Balad, as originally found on the Zaytuna site. Thought we’d post it up here to remind this pauper that there’s good in all obstacles and verily with every hardship comes ease:
May Allah make us of those people on the Right Hand and save us from those of the Left Hand. Allahumma Ameen.

Don’t look at your form, however ugly or beautiful. Look at love and at the aim of your quest...O you whose lips are parched, keep looking for water. Those parched lips are proof that eventually you will reach the source.
