Shaykh Muhammad alYaqoubi

In a talk called “Remembering Allah, Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the famous sign of marriage as found in the Holy Qur’an (Chapter 30; Verse 21):

And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put permanent friendliness and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.

Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi questions “why ‘mahabbatun wa rahma (love and mercy)’ are not used?” and later explains:

Marriage is built on permanent friendliness (mawaddah) not on love (mahabba).

… verily this is something to reflect on. May Allah grant us permanent friendliness and mercy. Allahumma Ameen.
