Marriage – mawaddah/mahabba?

In a talk called “Remembering Allah“, Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned the famous sign of marriage as found in the Holy Qur’an (Chapter 30; Verse 21):

وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ مَوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put permanent friendliness and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.

Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi questions “why ‘mahabbatun wa rahma (love and mercy)’ are not used?” and later explains:

Marriage is built on permanent friendliness (mawaddah) not on love (mahabba).

… verily this is something to reflect on. May Allah grant us permanent friendliness and mercy. Allahumma Ameen.

Kitaba – Islamic Texts for the Blind (…launch of first production…)

For anyone who doesn’t know already Kitaba – Islamic Texts for the Blind is a social enterprise community project dedicated to empowering and promoting the growth and well being of visually impaired Muslims and their communities.

Alhumdulillah with the help of Islamic Village, Knowledge and Wisdom, and TheCuttingRoom.org, Kitaba has produced a translation of Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari’s collection of Forty Hadîth on the Excellence of the All-Clarifying Illuminating Qurân entitled Fayd al-Mu’în ‘ala jam il-Arbaîn fî fadl al-Qurân al-Mubîn.

This text is also being produced in Braille, large print, audio format and into a computer reader accessible text.

Insha’Allah the book will be launched at the event below (see poster) where we hope Shaykh Muhammad alYaqoubi, may Allah preserve him, will teach the first Hadîth:

“the best of you is the one who studies Quran and teaches it.“
