The act of withholding is a form of giving

In every moment (whether awake or asleep) I’m being reminded of one of the aphorisms of Shaykh Ibn Ata’Illah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said something to the lines of

When He opens up your understanding of deprivation,
deprivation becomes the same as giving.*

There’s a lot of truth in the above. May Allah help guide us to what is good for us, withhold from us what won’t benefit us and make us content with that which is decided for us. Allahumma Ameen.

* = updated once the true wording of the aphorism was affirmed.

P.S: I’m a really bad student. If anyone knows the Aphorism in full then feel free to post it here. I keep hearing the full aphorism from a dear Shaykh who is reminding us of the above often but for some reason my ears only hear the ending. May Allah make me a better learner. Allahumma Ameen.

    I believe it is:

“Sometimes He gives while depriving you,
and sometimes He deprives you in giving.”

    The following aphorism is:
“When He opens up your understanding of deprivation,
deprivation becomes the same as giving.”

    Ch.9, No.’s 83 and 84.

    Thank you for this!
It’s always lovely to hear from Shaykh Ibn Ata’Illah (ra).

May Allah make us all better students. Amin.
