20 Ingredients to a Successful Marriage

This student was reflecting on the beautiful accounts of how our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) spent time with his wife, Aisha bint Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both).

In our reflection, we came across this good lesson on husband-wife interaction as based on the Sunnah, by Shaykh Riad Ouarzazi of the AlMaghrib Institute.

There’s 20 points/ingredients that he mentions for a successful marriage regardless of what age you are… happy learning:

    2. Allocate time to sit together and talk
    3. Have the look of love (with hugs)
    4. Give warm greetings (especially when you come home)
    5. Praise the wife and don’t compare her to someone else
    6. Participate together in the household chores
    7. Say kind words as kind words are sadaqa
    8. Spend time out together
    9. Have peaceful gatherings with one another
    10. Be balanced in decisions (for husbands)
    11. Show your interest, support, and care (especially when your spouse is sick)
    12. Break the daily routine (with a surprise)
    13. Pamper one another
    14. Call one another by beautiful names
    15. Don’t hide your feelings (be straightforward and keep it in privacy)
    16. Don’t talk about your problems at the time of night (keep your bed time to saying good things)
    17. Be grateful and say thank you to one another
    18. Apologise at times of errs and mistakes
    19. Respect one another
    20. Contemplate the Seerah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and how he treated his wives (may Allah be pleased with them all).
